Recruiting is simple if you keep a few things in mind:

Every boy should know how to join Scouting

The single most important part of recruiting is to get the word out so boys know when, where, and how to join. Sometimes we meet a young adult who says "I would have joined Scouting as a kid, but I never got the chance." We don't want this generation of kids to ever say that.

But I want to join Scouting!

Click here to join Scouting. The Council is always ready to help youth join Scouting. Or you may contact anyone in the District (here's a list of district volunteers) and they will help you join Scouting.

There's lots of help available during recruiting drives

There are three major recruiting activies every year:

  • Fall Youth Recruitment - focus on new Cub Scouts with support for troop and crew recruitment (see below)
  • Webelos Transition - focus on encouraging the graduating Webelos Cub Scouts to join a troop
  • Spring Recruitment - advertising and support for units to have spring recruiting events

We offer council-wide publicity, training, and printed materials to support pack, troop, and crew recruiting. Click here for Council materials to support recruiting.

Plan Ahead!

Successful recruiting requires planning, publicity, and a fun event for the kids. We can help you arrange it all. Remember the Boy Scout motto: Be Prepared. With a little planning and preparation, anyone can put on a successful recruting event.

Fall Youth Recruitment

The fall youth recruitment campaign ("FYR") is our major annual recruiting event. While it focuses on encouraging boys to join Cub Scouts, there is also support for troop and crew recruiting.

Recruitment Coordinator

Every unit that wants to take place should identify an adult leader who will coordinate the work. The cubmaster and committee chair are usually too busy for this, so it should ideally be another adult.

The coordinator should contact the District Membership Chair or Fall Youth Recruitment coordinator for more information. They are in the District Points of Contact list.

The coordinator should attend youth recruitment training, which is generally offered in early August around the district.

Youth Recrutiment Event

Every pack should plan an evening event for recruiting new Cub Scouts. Ideally the event happens after school starts. Arrange for a date, time, and location.

The Council will print fliers and posters to publicize your event. These need time to print, so give the District Executive your event information as soon as possible.

We provide details on planning your event, publicizing it, and running it, at the recruitment training.

Lion Cubs

Northern Star Council has developed a pilot program for kindergarten boys, called Lion Cubs. The program uses materials and plans specially developed for younger boys and their parents. We have been granted special permission by the National Council to offer this program to interested units in our district.

If you are a unit in the Eagle River district and you are interested in participating, contact the District Membership Chair.
